Travel details part 2

I canceled an order for a new SD card.  That lowers the cost of my camera and accessories to $471ish.  I just bought a train tickets between Ollanta and Machu Picchu.  The total was $62 including taxes.  I bought two button-up synthetic shirts at Lee’s clothing that were on sale for $21.47 and $24.47 each.  I had hoped to buy pants there also but the only ones they had in my size were a bit short in the leg.  I hope to find a pair of dark synthetic pants with zip-off legs in Seattle.  I have a few pairs but one is tan and has stains and burn holes from many camping trips.

I am considering travel insurance for this trip.  One of my major concerns is theft.  Since i’m going with a one bag system i’m not concerned about my bag disappearing from airport handlers – that seems to be the coverage most travel insurance offers.  For general theft of my stuff while on the trip (robbery or taken from my room) the household policy will cover me – but there is a $1,000 deductible.  Buying a cheap laptop might not have been best!  If i calculate the value of my camera, batteries, memory cards, laptop, cell phone, bag, clothing and sundries (yes! i used the word “sundries!”) then i might get up to the $2,000 or $2,500 mark.  I’ll have to keep a detailed list and values.

I’ve been using Google docs to store important information.  I scanned my passport and other IDs and uploaded them.  If i lose everything i can easily get to a computer and print out a copy of my passport.  I’ll be doing the same with any flight confirmation information and my train reservation sheet in case my organizer is lost.

This preparedness for a minor setback has me thinking of major catastrophes also.  First, if i’m able i’ll be taking care of myself.  But if i end up comatose or on life support everyone should know that if my insurance will cover all of the costs then use it up.  Otherwise pull the plug.  And if i die, if possible donate any organs that are of use and then have me cremated there before flying my ashes back.  That must be cheaper and more practical than flying a casket.

I’m bringing my cell phone for the clock, alarm, and organizing features.  I might look into getting a SIM card for it so i can post updates even if i don’t have an internet connection.  That seems like something worth trying to line up while in Lima when i first arrive.
