Hanging with the locals
One significant reason we chose to live away from the school was so that we would be more likely to have interactions with people outside of those we work with. It has taken a while but we now have a number of friends outside of school that we spend time with. Today we spent the afternoon with friends that live NW of Ulaanbaatar’s center. They live on the outskirts in a ger district but unlike many of their neighbors they are not burning wood for heat or haling water in plastic jugs. They have a nice home outside of the worst polluted areas of UB. Jordan played with their kids and some of the neighbors by having a watergun fight and later playing checkers. Pepper and I learned how to make khuushuur. Khuushuur are meat dumplings that are very popular in Mongolia. Since Pepper knows how to make some great Chinese dumplings it seemed important for us to learn Mongolian dumplings too.
