Ridiculous prices of airfare

Here’s a confession.  I’m planning a trip to South America later this month.  On our trip to Cambodia, Vietnam, and Bali i got a viral parasite – the travel bug.  Nah – I’ve had it all along.  It has just been dormant or satisfied by domestic travel.

My plan at this moment is to fly to Los Angeles and stay at Hotel Kevin Dean.  Then off to Lima, Peru.  I’ll crash in the airport that night and get a very early flight to the Peruvian city Cusco.  I’ll spend a few days exploring there and getting accustomed to the 10,000 elevation before pressing on to see Maccu Picchu for a few days.  Then i think i’ll be meeting up with Levy in either Lima or Guayaquil, Ecuador. We’ll spend a week or two working up the coast of Peru and Ecuador. Who knows – i might go as far as Columbia. On the 14th of February i’ll fly back to Los Angeles and the 15th return to Petersburg.

In starting to plan the trip i’m struck by this awful realization. A round trip flight to Los Angeles from Petersburg (with flight changes in Juneau and Seattle both ways – the least expensive itinerary) comes to $734.40. I’ll be using miles instead – 25,000 of them.

But my flights from LAX to Lima (with a brief stop in Costa Rica), Lima to Cusco and back to Lima, and then a flight out of Ecuador to Los Angeles (with stops in Costa Rica and El Salvador) will run a grand total of $680.

I have not booked any of the flights yet but i do have ample vacation time and permission for the time off. Speaking of vacation time… starting this summer I’ll begin to accumulate 48 days of leave per year. Right now i get 36. So if you thought i traveled a lot before…

Don’t even get me stahted! From Anchorage things make slightly more sense, although a weekend in Barrow is comparable to a weekend in Paris, airfare-wise.

I trust you are familiar with the goldmine that is http://www.sleepinginairports.com/

It’s enough to inspire adventure in anyone, I think.

Actually, you were infected by that bug “in utero” – you were conceived in the Netherlands, lived in Germany, and traveled to Austria, Spain, Monaco, Italy, France, Belgium, Switzerland, and I think Andorra all before you were born! I’m envious – enjoy your trip!

Caught your info on a websearch. Crazy – I live in SD right by your photo (Crystal Pier in PB) and am planning a trip to the Galapagos/Machu Picchu this Christmas. But, believe it or not, you and I are probably the only ones tying all three locations together. I absolutely adore Alaska and have been to Petersburg. Actually, I have coined the phrase “you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a bear in Petersburg”! Took a fabulous whale tour there during miserable weather only to realize that whales LOVE torrential downpours. Whales were breeching everywhere the eye could see! Another coined phrase – popcorn whales.

Anyway, would love to hear more about your trip.
