With Valentine’s Day in the past it is safe to mention my blog post on DIYlife that detailed sweet gifts. I made Cena specialized wrappers for candy bars which include points that may be redeemed for prizes from a catalog. I just need to make the catalog now! We decided that we would try and keep our gift giving pretty low key in keeping with our New Year’s resolution.
I wonder if dating sites get a surge of traffic around the middle of February. Singles must feel somewhat pressured to look around a little more aggressively around this time of the year. With the proliferation of online match making websites like eHarmony and Match.com there must be some substance to those sites. I don’t know anyone that has used a dedicated dating service to meet anyone and form a lasting relationship.
I’m intrigued by the concept of speed dating. You sign up for a group of people that literally just spend a few moments talking and then they rotate. Then you can quickly and easily filter out the people you like or get along with from those that annoyed or were not a match. I wonder if people try out those more around Valentine’s Day also.

I have one friend that is getting married to someone they met on eharmony.com, and have two other friends that are in long term serious relationships with people they met on eharmony.com. Now that i think of it, all three of them are girls. I’d be interested to know what the success rate is on a gender basis. one of the girls went on a lot of dates through match.com but didn’t find her match.

I know a girl that got married to someone from eharmony, two female co-workers who both met their significant others on match.com, and a guy in a long term relationship from match.com. However, that being said, I think you are right, there tends to be a gender bias with those sites. It seems a lot of girls go on a lot of dates before settling, where in the one male instance I know of, she was girl #2. Interesting topic to research though.

I also have a female friend who met her sig other on one of those dating sites. I know she tried a few times (don’t know that she went on many dates, mostly chatted online) and had given up but got a coupon for a free week and went back. She and her boyfriend have been together for almost a year now I think. Another friend frequently does speed dating in Chicago. There’s also a new trend in speed dating…instead of talking for a few minutes people just stare into each others eyes.
