Heating the house this winter

So we switched to a small oil heater for our portion of the house last year. We even programmed the heater so that the temperature drops to 60 at night and while we’re at work. Regardless, today we had fuel delivered. $285 worth at $3.50 a gallon. I tell you, Chavez’s free heating oil sounds quite good right about now. We’ve been doing alright though. We put sleeping bags between our sheets and the comforter and have slept great because of it. The cats pile on the bed with us too. The only problem we’ve had is that our living room doesn’t get much heat because of the way the house is arranged. I have considered putting a wood stove in the room but our roof is so high that to get a proper draw we would end up with a monstrous free standing chimney. I don’t want to put a small oil heater in the room because it would vent into the carport or right on the front porch. So an electric heater would probably be our best option. Electricity is fairly inexpensive for us and the more we use the less it costs per kw. A company that sells ventless gas logs also has a nice looking freestanding electric stove. It happens to be $100 off right now too. That might be just the right item to help warm the living room during our chilly evenings.
