My dad go a device that just takes analog input for Christmas and converts it to digital output:

http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/audio/85fb/

this lets you use whatever turntable you'd like (for example if you have access to a high end DJ turntable) and convert it into a digital stream. He used a relatively low end technics turntable and the output wasn't that bad. Though I will say that the music he listens to is not very bass intensive.

I was planning on borrowing a SL-1210 from a friend of mine and borrowing that device from my dad. If I ever get around to that I can let you know how it turns out because the stuff that I would be ripping is very bass intensive.
