It turns out that my last night playing music at Kito’s in June may have been the last night that i play there ever. They have decided to put the DJ on their payroll so I can’t take the position. For one, my contract with the City states that i can not be employed by any other businesses without the city manager’s approval. Years ago i was approved to start my own business playing music, doing websites, and doing computer repair. I also have Zoom Bikes. But in both cases i am the “boss” and define my own work schedule.
They have decided to pay $15 an hour for their employee. At that rate it would take me 72 weekends (almost a year and a half straight) working both Friday and Saturday nights to pay off my entire investment in equipment. I understand their decision though. Paying someone $15 is a lot less than my $75 an hour. I also drank for free (although some night i did not have any) and i’m sure that they will not allow employees to drink on the job.
This will end three winters of playing music there. November 29th, 2003 was my first night playing music there. I may ask a few of the other places if they want to hire me but if not i will probably try to sell some of my equipment. This might be a sign to grow up and invest in some other project.
