The Petersburg Indian Association does home collection of glass, aluminum, plastic, and steel cans. They require that the items be sorted so we do so and put them out every Thursday. For years i have used five gallon buckets to keep my recyclables sorted. Unfortunately, they don’t stack or even sit next to each other very efficiently. Having four buckets within easy reach of the kitchen ended up being an eyesore. Just like the broom closet (which is in the kitchen) would be an eyesore if it didn’t have a door.

I went to the hardware store and bought five stacking containers and lids that would fit in the broom closet. I cut an opening in the side of each of the bins with a utility knife. I also bought stickers to label each of the bins but they don’t adhere to the plastic well. I just remove the lids and take the totes out to the street. With the holes cut in the side and the lids left inside i don’t think anyone will bother stealing them. Perhaps some day Petersburg will have blue recycling bins like most areas have. Until then we have our own.
