January 2006

One year in jail for wearing a shirt that says something someone disagrees with? (Not that she’ll get a year in jail – but she was arreated for not covering her t-shirt.) I can only imagine what sort of a felony some of my t-shirts carry. I better leave them home when i go to DC in two weeks.

I have a number of projects lately that have needed me to create interpretive panels about plants, animals, or other natural features in the parks I manage. I had asked Iain to work on some but I know that he’s been quite busy so kept asking around. (Sorry Iain!) Lisa Larson worked for the P&R Department one summer and she was back visiting this holiday season. I went to her site and her nature studies were exactly what i was envisioning for the panels. So she created these illustrations for Sandy Beach Park: Devil’s Club, Thimbleberry, Salmonberry, Huckleberry, blueberry, and Skunk Cabbage. There is still quite a bit more work to be done. For a separate grant i need to have panels on eagles, sea birds, muskeg, salmon, shell fish, tidal pools, Tlingit fish traps, and commercial fishing done. And for my artistic friends and family: the pool project will have public art in it. The school board and school superintendent choose the recipients but there is $47,000 available for the pool alone. I’m pretty sure there is over $10,000 for the voc-ed expansion. So get those gears turning… and please, no more farking murals.

Airport police

Sometimes you arrive at the airport and there are fireworks and sirens. No – it isn’t the 4th of July parade – it’s the airport police trying to scare a moose away from the airport entrances.

I took this picture with my treo as we descended into Anchorage. I want to go sledding.

In just a few hours Cena and I are to head to Anchorage. I have a meeting for ARPA that i need to run on Saturday there. We don’t have a lot planned unless the volcano makes a show like it did two days ago. It’s dang cold there though. It looks like the aurora might be fairly visible on Saturday night. Ketchikan had a little excitement yesterday. Don’t plane crashes happen in threes? Hopefully not three in the same state.

One thing i want to do more of is to use flickr. Here are some of my latest shots uploaded to flickr.

Bummer. In less than two weeks Cena and i are zipping up to Anchorage for a meeting i have up there. We were hoping to drive to Homer to see Augustine (an active volcano) but the damn thing is quieting down. I guess it is still likely that we’ll go there to take close shots like these of the eagles there.
