Well, the voting is over and Petersburg will be building a new swimming pool. 566 yes votes to 246 no votes. I’m still a bit stunned. I did not expect the vote to pass by that margin. Five years ago when we voted the measure passed by about 100 votes. Voter turnout was higher - but it wasn’t a special election. This larger margin will be looked upon favorably by the Rasmuson Foundation when i submit our grant request.
As a result of this election we’ll apply for Rasmuson Foundation support, continue to hope that the state revises their decision that 61% of the facility qualifies for educational funding, and when the Governor signs the state budget in May we’ll go out to bid. Then hopefully by October we’ll be breaking ground on the new facility and construction should be completed within a year. Two years from now the school, parks and recreation, and the whole community will have a new facility to use.
I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Congrats and everything, but that (soon to be old) pool is where I experienced 50% of my most formative experiences!

I just want some of that toxic white powder that is piled under the back side of the pool structure.

keith moniz and i used to smoke weed under the rotting stairs by the covered area. i remember visiting from time to time him while he was working. i would be learning how to skateboard under the covered area. (even though it had a roof, it still got about 60% wet underneath. so, i would get frustrated and visit him) some days, keith would show up for work on his sporty scooter. he would bring booze that he stole from his parents and stash in under the seat. the thing i remember most about the pool was the dank, humid air inside…. and a constant blasting of “alternative music” by whomever was working there.

A little off topic, but will the pool be closed ALL summer? My oldest took swim lessons last summer and I’d love to get my pipsqueak #2 in this coming summer as well. Any news to share?
